Newcastle Gaol Museum Precinct
Take a step back in time and discover the era of Moondyne Joe, Western Australia’s most famous bush ranger. Less than an hour here can transport you back 150 years!
Enjoy the authentic surroundings and original artefacts. Have fun enjoying the tiny cells, wander through the Old Police Stables and retrace Toodyay’s colourful past – will you discover some secrets? There are a number of hands-on activities to try.
The Newcastle Gaol, Police Stables, 1907 Lock-up and the Wicklow Shearing Shed are part of a historic complex of buildings associated with Law and Order. The Newcastle Gaol was completed in 1865, replacing two previous lock-ups at old Toodyay (now West Toodyay) and the Convict Depot Barracks at Newcastle.
The precinct has public toilets and outdoor shaded areas for your convenience. Guided tours can be arranged for groups of 10 or more

There is wheelchair access to Warders Quarters, exercise yard, main temporary exhibition room, Machinery Shed, Wicklow Shearing Shed and the Stables. There are small steps up to 15cm and some rough ground and/or unsealed surfaces.
The cell doors have 50cm clearance only and some display cabinets will offer limited viewing opportunities.
Mill Museum
Connor’s Mill is an icon of Toodyay and the legacy of one of the town’s most prominent businessmen, Daniel Connor. It is a testimony to Toodyay’s busy agricultural industry.
Connor’s Mill, with its historic machinery, demonstrates for visitors the process of turning wheat into flour. It retells stories of the many families whose lives revolved around this grand convict era building. There are a number of hands-on activities through the displays. Guided tours can be arranged for groups of 10 or more.
